The Case for Mirrored Furniture

Should you consider buying mirrored furniture when decorating your home?

Consumers are divided between those who say that this type of furniture does not reflect real living conditions, and those who are captivated by the clean, clear, and classy atmosphere created by mirrors in a room.

Consumers who balk at the idea of spending a hundred dollars for a simple jewelry box covered with a mirror also point out the apparent general thoughtlessness of adorning certain fixtures with mirrors. Such items would not last long without incurring some damage. In a house with a young family, for instance, those mirrors won’t stand a chance of lasting for a few years without getting bashed by the frolicking children. Assuming that the mirrors survive breakage, owners must still provide constant cleaning as they tend to accumulate dirt, smudge, and fingerprints very easily.

On the other hand, proponents extol the virtue of having a few mirrored side tables and stands placed strategically around the house, eliminating the need to run up to the bedroom to check on appearance before going out or ushering visitors in. That’s not even the main reason why people should adorn their rooms with mirrors crafted into furniture. The real benefit is the distinctly elegant mood created in spaces where mirrors are placed. And speaking of spaces, mirrors add a sense of spaciousness in a room, adding wonderfully to the unique sense of style and functionality. As for the cleaning and maintenance, the fact is that generally, it doesn’t take too much time and effort to wipe off grime and fingerprints from mirror surfaces. Do it with a soft cloth or sponge, and soap. For tougher stains, try vinegar with water.

Furniture enhanced with mirrors take several forms such as tables, nightstands, dressers, drawers, and chests. They are made of wood with the mirrors fitted onto the surface or fastened with screws. There are heavy, classic designs and antique models, as well as chic, modernistic variations.

Their prices range from a hundred dollars for a small, basic fixture such as a chair, to well over four or five thousand dollars for a magnificent and stylish dresser. They can be found in various retail outlets and in many online shops. When shopping for mirrored furniture, there are a few very important things to remember.

First, you must look for an experienced dealer to see to it that the shipping of your brand new, shiny furniture goes well. Mirror is fragile as you know, so it is important that the item should be well protected against breakage as it goes through delivery. Insist on thick foam being wrapped around the item before it is sealed in a sturdy container prior to shipment.

Second, although you will surely be shopping around for the biggest saving you can take advantage of, try to thoroughly weigh the price-to-quality aspect. Are you sacrificing quality craftsmanship for a few saved dollars? Poor quality in this case can mean, for example, that the screws are fastened too tight so the mirror will soon crack or not tight enough that the whole mirror will fall off. Another example of poor craftsmanship is the presence of sharp edges in the mirror or other parts.

So as you can see, having mirrored furniture entails moving around the house with caution and spending a bit more time and effort in maintenance, not to mention probably spending more cash in acquiring the furniture in the first place. However, all these sacrifices may be worth it if you consider the reward: uncommon elegance and style that transforms your living space.
